There was a time when sugar was hardly found in our house and it was a treat for my youngsters to eat sweets. When my oldest was a toddler, I knew that pasta turned to ‘sugar’ in the bloodstream and made him bounce off the walls!!
It seems like sugar laden foods and snacks are more prevalent and more of an issue than ever before. I am concerned for my own health and for that of my family. We shrug off the thought that sugar in some form will have an adverse affect on us. Most often we don’t notice because we are so young that our health hasn’t taken its toll yet. On the other hand, we are so accustomed to the highs and lows sugar substances bring that we don’t even know what it is to live and feel healthy.
I am reading the fantastic book, “Trim Healthy Mama” by Serene Allison & Pearl Barrett. I’m not far into the book but it has already captured my interest and motivated me to research.
Am I addicted to sugar? Regretfully yes! I am going to lick this addiction as I believe that sugar laden foods have a LOT to do with how we feel both physically and emotionally.
In order for me to be a wholehearted mama, I need to function optimally for the Lord as I serve my family.
Are You a Sugarholic?

- I do not eat refined sugar every day: T, F
- I can go for more than a day without eating some type of sugar-containing food: T,F
- I never have cravings for sugar, coffee, chocolate, peanut butter, or alcohol: T,F
- I’ve never hidden candy or other sweets around my home in order to find and eat them later: T,F
- I can stop after eating one piece of candy or one bite of pastry: T,F
- There are times when I have no sugar of any kind in my home: T,F
- I can go for three or more hours without eating and not experience the shakes, fatigue, perspiration, irritability, depressions, or anxiety: T,F
- I can have candy and other sweets in my home and not eat them: T,F
- I do not eat something sweet after every meal: T,F
- I rarely drink coffee and eat donuts or sweet rolls for breakfast: T,F
- I can go for more than an hour after waking up in the morning without eating: T,F
- I can go from one day to the next without drinking a sweetened soft drink: T,F
“If you answered “false” to more than four of these statements, chances are you are sugar-sensitive. You are probably allergic to sugar and also addicted to it — the same way an alcoholic is addicted to alcohol. You crave sugar, have withdrawal symptoms when you don’t get it, and probably feel better for a short time after you’ve eaten it. In eating sugar to feel better, you are actually making your condition worse.”
“If you answered “false” to four statements or fewer, it doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t have a problem with sugar. You may not be addicted to it, but perhaps you don’t quite realize just how much sugar you’re eating.” (“Lick the Sugar Habit” by Nancy Appleton, PhD, page 9)
I completely failed this test!! Even back when my children were little I would have failed this test, not because I was addicted but because I had no control other than not buying sweets. Instead, I tried to stay my cravings through baking with carob (YUCK!!) and making cakes with whole wheat and sugar substitutes like honey (which only metabolizes slower, LOL!!)
I want to wholeheartedly serve the Lord and my family for many years to come.
Sugar laden blood steals my JOY as my blood sugar levels surge and dive. Living chemically imbalanced when you are young sends you into a constant spiral with each cycle as moods soar and dip like a roller coaster. As you age, weight gain, diabetes 2, headaches, and fatigue are just a few of the maladies that cause your immune system and health to decline.
