I am not particularly a pack-rat but even though I am not, clutter collects in the kids rooms, in the kitchen, on the desk, table and any flat or not-so-flat surface.
In this series, I am going to be showing you how easy it is to declutter by just jumping in and getting started one baby-step at a time.
When we moved from the house we had lived in for over 20 years, we had 7 kids still living at home. Our house sold so quickly that there was no time to declutter or sort through what needed to ‘go,’ we just had to move!
Clutter is Depressing!
Some people think it is OK to live in a mess but I say, it is freeing to the mind and those melancholy feelings that sometimes creep into the best of us.
If you are dealing with depression on any level, I would encourage you to try decluttering and sifting through the things that you no longer use or need. You will find that it lifts a burden from your shoulders.
I remember my desk when our children were still all at home being homeschooled. No one could find it!
Lack of order would stress me and I would go crazy trying to tackle the messy toy closet just for the peace and calm that would ensue.
Don’t look at your piles and stashes and then walk away because you are clueless where to begin.
Hone in on something small and start there, for starters.
You might start with one flat surface, like the coffee table. Remove every item that is piled on it and return it to where it belongs or throw it out.
Then put something pretty in the middle to dare anyone to mess with the table top ever again!
Don’t Start with the Whole House
Don’t take on the whole house or you will get discouraged and quit before you begin.
Start with a room like the living room because generally, that room does not have storage-room or places to stash messes. Well, do you have kids?!
If you have furniture that circles the whole room . . . remove any piece that is extra and not needed. Like that extra sofa from Aunt Mae.
The room will look lighter and less cluttered with only the furniture that you need. Please don’t think you have to hang onto something that you don’t even like for sentimental reasons.
Next, remove every last thing from any drawer or storage unit or bookcase. Just do one drawer or shelf at a time. You may NOT overwhelm yourself!
Hold each item in your hand and ask yourself:
- Does it belong in the room?
- Does it need to be given to Good Will?
- Does it need to be thrown out?
- Would it look nicer in another place in the room?
Then, put the items back that are going to stay in the room all dusted off nice.
Schedule 5-15 Minutes a Day
Don’t try to do the whole room in one day. You will never declutter another area of space in your home!
Schedule decluttering, just one room, for 5-15 minutes a day every day or once a week until the job is done. It’s that easy-peasy!
Then set your timer and get to it!!
While You Are At It
I just did this to a room that used to be our son’s room. It is being changed up into a craft/guest room. I took every last thing out of the closet that had been stashed there. It is amazing how much useless junk had found a home in a room I had never used personally before.
The next thing I am going to do is paint and redecorate to reflect how the new purpose for this room. Painting it will give a clean and tidy ‘look’ and with less stuff, the room will appear lighter and refreshing.
You might be in a season where painting is just too much. No worries. Just do what you can and go through one area of the room at a time until it is done!
