With twenty-four hours in each day, we are still constantly desperate for time before midnight each night. We ought to get more than 4 or 5 hours sleep but many of us don’t. Others of us sleep much longer getting 7-9 hours of sleep each night but often because it is just so overwhelming that there is so much to do. It is easier to escape and sleep!!
Desperate for time!!
It seems that the earth is revolving faster and faster like the boat going through the tunnel in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. There just isn’t enough time in the day. Don’t you wish you had six hours more each day?
How can Time be Managed Better?
There are lots of resources on how to manage your time. You can read some of them and glean pertinent ideas on how to run (think 100 yard dash) your day except that what mom has the time for that?!
Instead, since you and I are both desperate for time, let’s take a speed reading course on how to manage your time all in one post!!
I need this as well as you do since my To-Do List didn’t even happen and the one in my brain is as BIG as an iceberg. Hence the idiom that I have only chipped off a corner of the iceberg (or was it tip?)!
6 Quick Tips When You are Desperate for Time
- Get enough sleep!! No matter what season in life you are in, you might be a desperately tired mama. I wish I knew this when I was younger (or listened) since we all can think with more clarity when we are well rested. When my children were little, of course, I couldn’t get everything done while they were up. I would stay up at least until midnight but too often would pull through until 1am or even 3am. How dumb!! What can I tell you?? I am a night owl. The problem is that I am also an early riser and love to get up between 5am and 6am depending on when I went to bed. I have a rule for myself now that would do anyone good that has the same tendencies. I make sure I am in bed by midnight at the latest. I try to be in bed by 11pm. You get the best sleep before midnight and how much do you really accomplish once your brain has shut down?!
- Make a To Do List and preferably the night before. The house is quiet and the children are sleeping and you can think clearly and pray fervently over your day. I don’t know how many days I started off running as children needed correction just as soon as they were up. Something about having more than one child brings out their sin nature. It helps to have some thoughts written down (not in stone) so I could do them when I had an extra moment. Extra moment? I had 7 children!! I like writing lists and I put too much on my list. In the morning it sure seems like I can accomplish all that when in reality I am blessed to get one or two extra things done.
- Have a daily routine. A morning routine is important to get the day started but this is your schedule. I’d rather call it your daily routine since I prefer the day to flow rather than be stressed when life doesn’t happen between half-hour time slots. I righteously made out a schedule for each school year that had my name and each child’s name included. Yes, it was divided up into half-hour to an hour time slots but I rarely (if ever) paid attention to that. It was just more computer friendly that way. I kept it on my computer, pinned it on the fridge (and my more-wiser-older-children laughed) and off we went through the school year. What my sweet awesome children never realized was how much it helped to organize my day in my brain. Thankfully it seemed to them to have the free-flow that kids love.
- Have a menu plan. If you panic every day at 5pm when your husband comes home from work and wonder WHAT in the world you will make for supper . . . there IS a better way!! For years I made menus for the week and some years for the month. I made a grocery list to go with it and could rotate the menus when I didn’t have time to make a new one. It saves money and makes life a whole lot easier. During this season of my life, I am not doing so great with planning as I never know how many will be home for supper. I still ought to be more organized since I am desperate for time!!
- Naps & Reading Time. As a homeschooling mother, wife, and teacher, I wore many hats throughout the day. I was running on little sleep several times a week and desperate for time. My children were little and needed naps and I needed them to take a nap. After lunch, the younger children went down for a nap. My older children were allowed to read for a half hour before doing some schoolwork (like dissecting a frog – UGH!) that couldn’t be done with littles underfoot. When they all were little that gave me some quiet to get things done that was impossible to do with them all up and around. Even if it were just reading a book!!
- Delegate. Delegate. Delegate. Did I you say you have children?? Well!! Delegating responsibilities is the best way to gain extra time when you are desperate for time. I know one mom who does all the housework herself. She has the most well behaved children and they all are turning out to love the Lord, so she is certainly doing something right. For me, doing all the housework, homeschooling, and doing all the other things I do in the course of a day, spells disaster!! My children were each assigned chores for the year. We didn’t rotate as with my children and their abilities, that just wouldn’t have worked. Their chores were recorded on a chore chart and they had a list too (which I am sure they ignored) and they actually memorized it as they repeated the tasks each day. I had more time in those days than I have now that I do all the chores myself. I had time to run our homeschool support group, moderate a homeschooling question board, and two web sites, and we had a rabbitry with 60+ rabbits. It was good for them since it taught them to be diligent and prepared them to have the work ethics that are lacking in most young people today.
There you have it!! A little shorter than a book. All in a nutshell to help you redeem your time instead of being desperate for time!!
