The math wasn’t the problem. I realized that the real issue was people’s behaviors around money, and that’s something math alone can’t fix. ~Dave Ramsey’s Complete Guide to Money~
THAT is an eyeopener!!
Here all along I had thought that money was our problem.
Or, the lack thereof.
We think it is a crying shame that our country is being devastated by debt but we fail to take a look at our credit card balances. I say ‘balances’ because most of us have more than one credit card!
I have been writing this series on money, not because I am so good with money or have ‘arrived’ as a financial counselor but to share what my husband and I are incorporating into our lives.
The timing is off by many years because it took us that long to get on the same page.
I can’t tell you how important it is to be on the same page as a couple.
I can’t believe I am saying this, but it is better to be in debt than to have financial disagreements destroy your marriage like so many Americans.
Before you say, “Not me” and continue to drip your opinions on your husband (like I did for too long) check the statistics!!
As a couple, we are going through materials from Dave Ramsey (which means, mostly watching You Tubes.) Just so you know that much of what I am sharing is not out-of-my-head (I am never all that original) but instead, what we are applying to our life through his videos and books.
Do You Have a Life of Regrets?
Oh! I wish we had done things differently.
To some extent we have been ‘good’ with our money. We have always paid our bills.
There is so much I wish we had done years back when I read Larry Burkett’s books.
Timing is always the best thing.
Like it or not, the timing is right.
If our timing is so off in order to show others the importance of having your money in order, then it will all be worth it.
If we had always had our money ducks in a row, why would you listen to me?!
We never took a loan out against our mortgage and we never went on exotic vacations in Europe or African safaris using the credit card.
Wait. We never took exotic vacations either way.
We could be living much easier by now had we been wise with the use of our money.
It has nothing to do with wealth or that Christians aren’t supposed to have money.
I am so tired of hearing that Christians are not supposed to save or have some money put away in the bank.
No wonder giving to missions is almost a thing of the past. Do you know how many missionaries have to come back ‘home’ in order to raise more support?
Or how many missionaries have to totally give up their ministry?
One of the reasons that we ought to be better stewards of our money is so that we can give.
There is a deeper problem that has been causing our debt and my husband and I are going to face the music.
I would have told you that “he” was totally the whole problem. After all, he is the one who came home with a car complete with a loan.
If I am more honest, I do the smaller buying and charge when we don’t have the money. How many times did I charge when I just ‘wanted’ that new item of clothing?!
Behavior is the underlying problem
Debt isn’t the problem at all. Debt is the symptom that lets you know that there is a ginormous sickness underneath it all.
As we continue with this series on money, I hope you will join me each day and be challenged to grow in your understanding of being a good steward of your finances.
I am going to be sharing some of the principles that Dave Ramsey teaches as we work through our debt that remains and look towards having financial peace in our marriage.
We won’t be able to stock pile money at this point as we have been married for 36 years, and we may not be able to have the life of ease when we retire (whenever THAT will happen) that we could have had if we started saving in our twenties.
We will be freed up to give to missionaries and help other Christians in need much more often while enjoying less stress because we will be out of debt!!
How is this challenging you? Maybe it is challenging you to NOT worry and harass your husband since he is NOT on your debt free ‘page’.
