After the time changes, be it fall or spring, it is so hard to get back on track with being an early riser. Whether you have never managed to be an early riser or just need to get back into the habit, there are benefits to becoming an early riser this season.
It is hard to stay disciplined and be intentionally consistent. During the winter when my alarm goes off I want to snuggle down deeper into the covers. In the summer my routine has gone amuck and I rationalize with myself how beneficial staying in bed can be.
I Need to Become an Early Riser (Again) and I Just Thought You Might Want to Join Me??
Without school bells ringing, it is easy to become later and later with breakfast and routines for both you and your children.
When I am still in bed, I forget the urgency of anything I needed to do that day. It is all about procrastination.
Children don’t have any particular agenda and will help you procrastinate. They don’t care if their chores get done today or never!!
Benefits to Becoming an Early Riser
Sleeping in even an hour longer can mean that you miss out on the benefits of being an early riser. Here is what you will miss:
The birds singing
Watching the sunrise
Experiencing the early morning quiet
Meditating in God’s Word
Reading a portion from a book
Working on a writing project (like I am doing right now)
Workout or going for an early morning walk or run
Getting a head-start on putting the home back in order (I am clueless how this happens after picking it up before bed at night. Let me know if you’ve figured this out!!)
Be up and dressed, ready for the day before the rest of the house is up!!
Enjoying that cup of coffee or tea in the morning quiet
Intentionality the Night Before
I can get up early about three days in a row and then I bomb out! My day starts early only if I switch up my biological clock. Otherwise it will be hit-or-miss. More likely miss!
Here are a couple things I intend on doing the night before to make it easier to get up:
Put my cell phone ALWAYS on my bed-stand and SET the alarm.
Set my alarm clock and put it on the opposite side of the room. This way, I’ll have to get out of bed to turn it off.
6 Steps to Becoming that Early Riser:
GO TO BED EARLIER!! Determine how much sleep you need and count backwards and find your bedtime. If you still can’t get up, go to bed even earlier. Keep in mind, it may take time to switch your internal clock.
MAKE YOURSELF GET OUT OF BED!! When that alarm goes off, just lay in bed and give yourself another ten minutes of uninterrupted sleep (until the alarm rings again, pray under the covers (it doubles for praying in secret), tell yourself you will get up after 15 minutes (I do this all the time . . . and an hour later . . . !!)
HAVE PURPOSE IN YOUR LIFE and a reason to get up. Otherwise, you will not have a reason to get up and rising early will be negotiable.
PLACE VALUE on QUIET EARLY MORNINGS enough that you will be motivated to become and early riser.
I Need Alone Time
I don’t know about you, but I need alone time to refuel for my new day. Chances are, you have the same needs.
I had seven children who were 11 and under not that long ago and many days were stressful if I didn’t get going first. Personally, I absolutely needed to recharge, spending time with Jesus in order for things to fall into place for the day.
Tell me, are you an early riser, or do you burn the midnight oil?
