DeCluttering is more than just the act of decreasing the amount of stuff you own. We can accumulate clutter in many areas of our life until we are stifled for air.
Yes, it’s a good idea to go through each room of the house and tidy up and throw things out, but it is better to go a step further and clean out other areas of your life.
Clutter starts in the heart when we allow things to come in that will crowd out the simplicity of life.
I am constantly thinking of ways I can clean out and organize the hidden areas of my home. As I have spare time (whaat?) I have been cleaning out closets, my pantry, attic, drawers, and even what isn’t so hidden.
Here are some of the areas that I will be giving my attention to in order to simplify and declutter my life. I thought I would share them with you so you can declutter these areas too.
10 Ways to DeClutter and Simplify Your Life
1. Do You Have Too Many Commitments?
Are you running around almost all day and even into the evening? Even pre-school children can be so hurried and rushed as they are involved in gymnastics, swimming, ballet, and so many activities that they don’t have time to just be at home and be a child.
Mom, are you running your older children to after school (or after homeschool) activities so much that your home is a mess and cluttered? One of the reasons we live in cluttered homes is because we honestly just don’t have the time or energy to be a homemaker!!
2. Does Your Time Get Sucked into a Black Hole?
I used to have a round wastebasket next to my desk (which was a total disaster) and when my oldest son couldn’t find his schoolwork, he claimed it fell into ‘the black hole!’
Does this happen to your time? I can go on Facebook to post on my blog or personal page and get sucked into all the interesting things my friends share. Time can disappear quickly!
TV can do the same thing (but we literally dumped ours years ago) or maybe it happens to you through texting.
3. Is Your Home Filled with Cluttered Spaces?
It can be your bedroom or the living room. It might be your kitchen. Some people’s homes are neat unless you look into their closets. Either way, cluttered spaces can cause you to feel overwhelm or even depressed.
To declutter your home (gradually) is much more important than having it spotlessly clean. A simplified and uncluttered home looks clean even if it is not.
4. Are Your Thoughts Filled with Anxiety and Worry?
A cluttered kitchen counter is visible while a mind filled with anxiety and worry is hidden.
Yes, it often shows in actions but it is basically out of sight. Do you have a conversation going on with yourself that you are hardly aware of? Our thoughts are constant even when we are not aware of it.
We can become more mindful of our thoughts and ask Jesus to help us bring our thoughts into captivity. We can replace our anxiety and worry by casting our cares on the Lord.
Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; ~2 Corinthians 10:5~
Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved. ~Psalm 55:22~
5. Is Your Spending Out of Control?
If you are a wife, you are responsible for some of the household’s finances. In some ways there is not much you can do about how expensive things are but you don’t have to spend beyond your needs.
At least not too often.
For many years, I did many things to cut corners. I even used cloth diapers for the last three babies to save money. I saved more money than I will ever know by baking all of our bread, muffins, cookies, birthday cakes, sewing some of our clothes or mending them, sewing napkins and rarely buying a paper napkin. There is extra work involved but there are ways to keep spending from going out of control!
6. Is Your Conversation Honoring to Christ?
Ouch!! These days, a conversation is what we type out on Facebook, texts, blog comments, and emails.
If you actually pick up the phone and call a friend (who knows when I did that last!) are you remembering that God is listening in?
The other day I was using Facebook Messenger and accidentally typed into the wrong person’s text-box. What if I had sent a gossipy comment to that person?
Just remember that what you type onto the internet is permanent and canNOT be gotten back!
7. Is Screen Time Filling TOO Many Hours?
Screen time can be on your laptop, tablet or phone.
It can be for something legit like your home-based business or ministry.
On the other hand, screen time can be filling up your time so that you are neglecting relationships and things that ought to get done.
Balance is the key and a timer or schedule can come in handy.
Even a business needs hours of operation so that your husband and children also get your time. Clutter can even be in how you use your screen time!
8. Are Toxic Friendships Sucking You Dry?
Friendships are wonderful and there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Sometimes we can be drawn into a friendship that is negative about our husband, children, and in general just pulls us contrary to the way we should go.
Look for friendships that encourage you to go in the right direction and you will not be filling up your time and thoughts with negativity and mental clutter.
9. Are Your Eating Habits Breathing Life?
Do you buy candy and gum every time you go to the store? Are you living on a soda or coffee high?
Heavy sugar consumption depletes your energy and gives you major crashes. Not to mention what it does to your adrenals!
One way to clutter up your life is to clutter up your blood sugar levels so that you are not thinking and functioning to your best ability.
I want to live my life to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ and eating right, keeps me thinking with clarity and breathing life into those around me.
10. How Do You Start Your Mornings?
Do you have a morning routine?
Is coffee, relaxing, and wasting time on Facebook how you start your day?
Nothing is wrong with coffee but since I am not a coffee drinker, I tend to look at it in a bad light 😉 ha ha!!
I have a morning routine but more important than that, I have about 5 things I have to do first in order to get my day rolling right.
It is easy to lay in bed scrolling through Facebook or Instagram rather than scrolling through Proverbs, making your bed, doing a workout, spending time with Jesus, and drinking water and your Pink Drink.
Starting my day out like that gets me in good spiritual shape, and gets my body limbered up, my brain thinking with clarity, and my blood sugars, cholesterol and lipids balanced.
Decluttering our homes is an important thing to do in order to help us feel less pressured.
Clearing the cluttered spaces in other areas of our lives is even more important.
If your home is cluttered, remember that God looks on the heart and is not nearly concerned with your home.
This is in no way intended to make you feel overwhelm but to give you some ideas on areas to work on.
Just take one area and don’t expect yourself to do more than possible all at once. God doesn’t work that way. He chips away at you (and me) a little at at time!!
